Bitterweet melon or Bitter Melon

While in the hospital in San Francisco a few weeks back, I was talking with a patients mother about a food in her homeland of the Phillipines. She told me of a melon that was bitter in taste but when used in a medicinal capacity was the cure-all for just about anything. The woman was raised in the jungles of the Phillipines and her Grandmother would use the melon in a wide variety of dishes.
After doing some research on the bitter melon, I have found that there are a wide variety of uses fort the melon. Those uses ranged from a cure for Diabetes, heart disease, and colon cancer to cures for allergies.
What is the bitter melon, you ask?
The bitter melon is the edible fruit of the plant Momordica Charantia. The bitter melon grows in tropical and subtropical climates. The name ‘bitter’ comes from the bitter taste of this vegetable, considered the most bitter among all edible vegetables. Sounds awful, right?
Well, according to the National Bitter Melon Council, the bitter melon is:
"A long, warty, and very bitter fruit used in global cuisine, healing practice, and art. A member of the gourd family, it possesses qualities that can be used as food, medicine, and as instigators of situations that promote conversation
and community".
Hey, anything that promotes conversation must be good.

And... according to the council...

Bitter Melon, also known as Balsam pear, balsamina (Spanish), ku gua or foo gwa (Chinese), and assorossie (French), is a truly unique and bitter ingredient that is not yet well known in the United States.

Bitter compounds evolved in plants as a mechanism to deter consumption by animals. Humans, unlike other mammals, are the only creatures to have developed a palate (or taste) for bitterness. Bitterness defines our humanity!

Vitamineral Green by Health Force Nutritionals

By far the best tasting and most beneficial "Super", "Raw" or "Green" Food on the market today is Vitamineral Green.
In the fall of 2005, I was plagued with post transplant coronary artery disease as a result of the immunosupressive medications I had been taking for my heart transplant. The ptcad subsequently led to several heart attacks and the placement of  5 stents in my heart. Not long after my last procedure for the stents, I started taking the "green", in hopes of delaying the inevitable need for a second heart transplant.  About two weeks into my green threrapy I noticed a marked difference in my energy level, focus, and most importantly, sleep habits.  Taking the green in the morning and before bed,  made my days much more enjoyable. I wake up rested and alert with plenty of energy throughout the day.
I have shared the green with over 30 people and about 50 percent of those people stuck with it and  even after a year, all of the 50 percent are stil taking the green. Good Stuff!
